The Classic Opening of ABC's Wide World of Sports

"While black and whites struggled with civil rights at home and the leaders of the Free World and the Eastern Bloc aimed nuclear missiles at one another, seventy thousand Soviet spectators and millions of American TV viewers watched six world records fall and cheered on a black female sprinted named Wilma Rudoph and a Siberian high jumper named Valery Brumel. The 1961 telecast put Wide World of Sports, initially intended as a “summer replacement,”  on the television map."
